AIPPI World Congress 2024

Remfry & Sagar Partner, Shukadev Khuraijam, was at the 2024 AIPPI World Congress in Hangzhou, China, where he was part of a panel that discussed the impact and relevance of patent term extensions (PTE) in different jurisdictions.

The session was titled: ‘It’s Not Yet My Time: Patent Term Extensions‘ and involved lively discussions between the panelists – Shukadev as well as Ivy Tsui (Gilead), Lilian Roriz (Licks Attorneys), Hongqiang Liu (Bayer) and Michael Alt (TQJ at the Unified Patent Court).

The audience posed quite a few questions and Shukadev explained India’s peculiar position as a developing economy – one which provides over 20% of the world’s supply of generic drugs – and the nuanced balance the Indian government must maintain. He also discussed the proposed FTA agreement between the UK and the Indian government which includes the issue of PTE and hinted that there is more to it than meets the eye!
