Samta is a seasoned IP attorney – her professional experience spans over two decades, during the course of which she has acted for leading domestic and multinational companies in the protection and enforcement of IP rights. A large part of her practice focuses on trademark laws and she is recognized for her strategic skills and portfolio management abilities in this domain.

Her expertise is especially strong when it comes to handling international registrations under the Madrid system, protecting non-traditional trademarks and assisting with the transfer and licensing of rights. Given her deep knowledge of how trademark systems work globally, Samta is also very well placed to advise clients on securing trademark registrations in jurisdictions outside India.

In addition, she leads the industrial designs practice at the Firm – representing right owners across a range of industries including the automotive, engineering, fashion and medical sectors.

Samta is currently vice-chair of INTA’s Non-Traditional Marks committee and has been recognised by INTA as a ‘High Performing Committee Member’ . She has previously served as chair of INTA’s Non-Traditional Marks South Asia subcommittee; co-chair of INTA’s India Global Advisory Council; and subcommittee chair of INTA’s Trademark Office Practices Committee (TOPC) for India. She is actively involved in MARQUES (Member of its Famous and Well known Marks committee) and the Pharmaceutical Trade Marks Group (PTMG) as well.

With her wide-ranging expertise, she also works with the Trade Marks Office in shaping issues of policy and procedure.

Interests

After a hard day’s work at the office, Samta revels in the company of her family, which includes a daughter and a son. Fond of reading herself, she takes a keen interest in acquiring varied titles for her children and is happy to see them immersed in make-believe worlds. Travel is something else they enjoy together, though her family complains she goes to every place twice – first virtually, when she’s researching the place of travel, and the second time, in person, when her penchant for sharing all her research interferes with the actual experience of a new spot!
